Recent data shows the stark reality: the attainment gap in mathematics between disadvantaged pupils and their peers widened dramatically in just a few years, soaring from around 4% to 17% (EEF). Over the same period, the number of children meeting the expected standard in reading dropped from 75% to 67% (The Literacy Trust). Behind these figures are children who feel anxious about homework, parents wondering if they’re doing enough, and teachers doing their best with too little support.

The impact of the pandemic goes beyond test scores. Many youngsters missed out on vital nursery routines and playground interactions, which help develop social skills, turn-taking and confidence. Changes to daily life have also affected behaviour and mental wellbeing, leaving some children more withdrawn or easily frustrated. We all share the same goal—to give our children the strong foundation they need to thrive.

So, what can we do? First, remember that real learning happens through everyday activities, not screens. For example, letting your child stir the cake mix or pair up socks can turn routine tasks into counting and colour-naming games. On the school run, simply pointing out road signs or ticking off the numbers on a car’s registration plate sparks curiosity and conversation. Singing a favourite rhyme on the walk home, describing what you see in the garden or building an improvised fort with cushions all add up to powerful, hands-on learning.

Outdoor time is another game-changer. Studies show that fresh air and green spaces boost concentration, mood and even academic performance. After a session in the park, most teachers notice children returning happier and more engaged—a relief for both child and parent.
