How Children Learn in Schools in the UK & Northern Ireland

1. Age Ranges & Key Stages

Early Years (3–5 years)
– Foundation Stage: play-based, learning through exploration and talk.
Primary (5–11 years)
– Key Stage 1 (5–7): building basic literacy, numeracy and social skills.
– Key Stage 2 (7–11): consolidating reading, writing, maths and introducing wider subjects.
Secondary (11–16 years)
– Key Stage 3 (11–14): broad curriculum with English, maths, sciences, humanities, arts and PE.
– Key Stage 4 (14–16): GCSE courses; pupils usually choose 8–10 subjects.
Post-16 (16–18 years)
– A-Levels, vocational qualifications (BTEC, NVQ) or apprenticeships.

Northern Ireland mirrors this structure but follows its own curriculum specifications (see section 5).

In Scotland, the Curriculum for Excellence organises learning into “Experiences and Outcomes” rather than conventional subjects, emphasising interdisciplinary projects and personal development.
